Salt Lake City, Utah
Established March 6, 1939

About Us

Chapter History

The Salt Lake City Daughters of Penelope chapter was established March 6, 1939, and named CHARAI in honor of the Charities or Graces. There were 24 charter members and it was the 79th chapter to be formed.

The members have always given their time in serving in leadership positions. The late Tina Katis served on the National Board as Grand Governor from 1961-1963. Ms Katis was runner up to National Penelope of the Year. Her suggestion of the name, ELLA, was chosen for a Guide Dog.  Tina was very humbled by this, since she had retinitis pigmentosa. Current member, Joanne Saltas, was National Penelope of the Year in 2007 and has served in all positions on the National Board culminating in two terms as GRAND PRESIDENT from 2012-2014.  Numerous members have served in elected positions on the District Board.  The most recent District Governor, Vasi Katsikathas,  is a member of CHARAI.
